H. Tezuka et al., 20-GB S OPTICAL TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER USING SIGE INTEGRATED-CIRCUITS/, Electronics & communications in Japan. Part 1, Communications, 79(12), 1996, pp. 25-35
A 20-Gb/s optical transmitter and a receiver with 3R functions is deve
loped for ultrahigh-speed optical communication systems for future mul
timedia communications. Integrated circuits (ICs), such as preamplifie
rs, differential amplifiers, D-type flip-flop (D-F/F), and selectors w
ith a 20-Gb/s operating speed have been developed using the SiGe proce
ss as key components of the optical transmitter and receiver. A wavegu
ide pin-photodiode with very low capacitance is used to realize a wide
bandwidth. A front-end module with a bandwidth of 16 GHz and ii gain
of 43 dBQ has been achieved using the preamplifier IC and the waveguid
e pin-photodiode (PD). A 20-Gb/s optical transmitter and a receiver is
fabricated using the developed SiGe. ICs, high-speed optical devices,
and a receiver sensitivity of -23 dBm are obtained.
