In attempt to have a better knowledge of graft incompatibility in grap
evine and to develop an early characterization technique, a histochemi
cal and histoenzymological analysis of the union zone has been perform
ed on in vitro micrografts and on green grafts of compatible and incom
patible combinations. Anatomical studies showed that vascular connecti
ons were absolutely necessary but not sufficient for the success of th
e graft. The abnormal starch distribution allows incompatibility chara
cterization but only after its morphological manifestation. Our histoe
nzymological study shows that peroxydase activity should not be used a
nd generalized for rapid characterization of incompatibility.
