Through a sequence of large scale 0 (h) over bar omega shell model cal
culations, Gamow-Teller strengths (S-+ and S--) in Fe-54 and Fe-56 are
obtained. They reproduce the experimental values by quenching the sig
ma tau operator through the standard factor of 0.77. Comparisons are m
ade with recent shell model Monte Carlo calculations. Results are show
n to depend critically on the interaction. It is argued that the exper
imental data contain enough strength in the region above the resonance
to make them consistent with the 3(N-Z) sum rule.
