Abstract
Withaperuvin E (C28H36O8, m/Z-169, m.p. 248-250 degrees), a trihydroxy , steroidal lactone isolated from the roots of Physalis peruviana has been found to provide protection against lipid peroxidation induced by cumene hydroperoxide in rat liver homogenates, the IC50 being 170 mu g/ml. The inhibition of malondialdehyde production by withaperuvin E h as been compared with that of the synthetic antioxidant parabenzoquino ne.
