S. Sami et al., CATHETER MIGRATION THROUGH THE ANUS FOLLO WING VENTRICULO-PERITONEAL SHUNT - REPORT OF 3 CASES, Neuro-chirurgie, 41(4), 1995, pp. 315-318
Three cases of abdominal catheter migration througt the anus following
ventriculo-peritoneal shunt are described. Two cases involved hydroce
phalus secondary to tuberculous meningitis and the third myelomeningoc
ele. Among the reasons for migration, the lenght of the abdominal cath
eter, trauma during the operation and infection must be taken into con
sideration. One patient was suffering from meningitis at the time of a
dmission, while the two others were asymptomatic. Treatment involved r
emoving the peritoneal catheter in 2 cases and the entire shunt system
in the patient with meningitis. The shunt was replaced one to two wee
ks later, The outcome was favourable in all three cases.
