The photoluminescence and excitation spectra of natural olivines or du
nites and harzburgites belonging to the Ural alpinotype hyperbasites w
ere studied. For the first time the hole centra emission bands of SiO4
3- (420,440, 470 nm) and of AlO44- (460 nm) in olivine spectra were re
vealed and rheir excitation spectra were registered. It was shown that
the luminescence should be interpreted as having the intracenter, not
recombination, character. Energy level scheme is constructed and the
election transitions are demonstrated providing the absorption and lum
inescence in the hole centra. Weak luminiscence bands at 630 and 700 n
m in olivines are correspondingly related to Mn2+ ions in inoctahcions
and Fe3+ in tetrahedrons. This was supported by the agreement of thei
r excitation spectra with theoretically calculated energy levels of Mn
2+ and Fe3+ ions.
