The oxidation in air of black core in ceramic specimens formed by pres
sing has been studied under experimental conditions in which the rare
of oxygen diffusion through the oxidised layer was the late controllin
g step in the oxidation process. An equation is proposed, which allows
the value of the effective coefficient of oxygen diffusion through th
e oxidised layer to be predicted fi om the propel ties characterising
the layer's porous structure (porosity, tortuosity, and average pore r
adius).
