The extraction of ethane from natural gas is based on a turboexpansion
process at cryogenic temperatures. Significant improvement can be ach
ieved by introducing minor plant structural modifications. The presenc
e of discrete decisions to account for different process configuration
s leads to a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) optimization
model. The program has been used to simultaneously determine the optim
al configuration and operating conditions for different feed mixtures.
