Using a recently developed many-body theory, we investigate the veloci
ty dependence of charge transfer in atom-surface scattering. We show t
hat under certain conditions, intra-atomic correlation effects can int
roduce nontrivial sources of nonadiabaticity. For situations where a s
harp Kondo resonance is formed near the Fermi energy, the system can e
xhibit strong nonadiabatic effects even at low velocities. This nonadi
abatic behavior is caused by the relatively long-time scale for the fo
rmation or survival of the Kondo peak.
