Abstract
The spectra for the C-12 and Pb-208(p,He-2) reactions near the thresho ld for free pi(-) production have been measured at 0 degrees with a 39 0.6 MeV proton beam. The spectrum for C-12 shows no signature of pioni c bound states, and is explained to be composed of a flat continuum an d the contribution of the quasi-free pi(-) production process. For Pb- 208, the spectrum shows contributions from pi(-) bound states in addit ion to the quasi-free process. Preliminary results of the cross sectio ns are obtained for the elementary processes of pion production in the (p,He-2) reaction.
