There is some disagreement among teaching anthropologists in Britain a
bout whether fieldwork for undergraduates should be encouraged. This p
aper discusses some of the relevant arguments on both sides and descri
bes some of the courses in which fieldwork currently has a place. In t
he last part of the paper I describe my own recent experience trying t
o introduce a fieldwork element into a new course, and I examine the s
uccess and failure of the course in the light of the current arguments
