Abstract
There is some disagreement among teaching anthropologists in Britain a bout whether fieldwork for undergraduates should be encouraged. This p aper discusses some of the relevant arguments on both sides and descri bes some of the courses in which fieldwork currently has a place. In t he last part of the paper I describe my own recent experience trying t o introduce a fieldwork element into a new course, and I examine the s uccess and failure of the course in the light of the current arguments .
