The magnetic moments of epitaxial ultrathin body-centered tetragonal (
bet) Fe layers on the surface (001) of Pd are studied for different Fe
thicknesses (1 to 5 atomic layers). It is found that (i) for one Fe l
ayer, the Fe magnetic moment is strongly enhanced (2.95 mu(beta)) and
an induced magnetic moment on the Pd interface (0.4 mu(beta)) ferromag
netically coupled with that of Fe is observed; (ii) for the Fe bilayer
, two solutions are obtained: antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic
(F) coupling between the Fe layers, the AF solution might be more sta
ble as the onset of magnetism is obtained for smaller values of the Fe
exchange integral compared to that of the F one.
