CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SPIN MAGNETIC DIPOLE TERM AND THE MAGNETIC-ANISOTROPY IN CO PD MULTILAYERS/

Using the sum rules for magnetic X-ray dichroism we obtain trends for the spin-orbit interaction and the z-components of the orbital magneti c moments of Co in Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular easy axis of m agnetization. We found a correlation between the spin magnetic dipole term T-z, which is related to the spin-orbit interaction, and the crys tal-field. This is the first experimental evidence that the origin of the perpendicular easy axis of the magnetization in magnetic layers is determined by a fine interplay between the crystal-field and spin-orb it coupling.
