Abstract
Accurate control of the mold revel in continuous casting is believed t o be a key factor in improving the quality of the cast product. This p aper describes an application of advanced control to this problem lead ing to a complete recommissioning of the mold level control system. Ca reful physical modeling identified smooth as well as nonsmooth nonline arities in the process. Three different control strategies were implem ented and evaluated. The article also describes some of the steps nece ssary to bring advanced control to practical reality, including safety , rapid prototyping, on-line tuning, and economic evaluation.
