Growth disorders (orthopaedic bone diseases) in large breeds of dogs a
re mainly caused by overnutrition during the first months of life. The
problem is seen in spite-or just because of-optimised diet compositio
n. The classical nutrient deficiencies (concerning calcium, phosphorus
and Vitamin D) have become rare, except for the secondary hyperparath
yroidism after the feeding of slaughter offalls and grain. Prophylacti
c measures are recommended, including restricted energy supply for gro
wing dogs and the adequate composition of the ration. Dietetic treatme
nt of skeletal disease may be useful in the therapy of skeletal diseas
es, adequate approaches are discussed.
