Glycosylation of 2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl 2,3-di-O-be
nzyl-4,6-O- benzylidene-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (5) with alpha-D-gluco
pyranosyl, alpha-maltosyl, and alpha-maltotriosyl bromides 4,7, and 8
afforded the beta-D-(1-->4)-substituted trehalose tri-, tetra-, and pe
ntasaccharides 6, 9, and 10 which were fully characterized by H-1 NMR
spectroscopy. Deprotection gave the free oligosaccharides 1, 2, and 3.
