This paper reviews some of the literature relating to radiation damage
in composite materials and relates the results to the chemical struct
ure of the matrix resin. A mechanism of radiation damage at low temper
atures is outlined, and those structural features that contribute to r
adiation stability are defined. The effect of structure on radiation-i
nduced gas evolution rates is discussed and the results of experiments
designed to measure the influence of composition on gas evolution rat
es at 4 K are presented.
