It has been one of the basic tenets of German humanism that the classi
cal languages, along with mathematics, should play a decisive role in
every formal education worthy of the name. Even today, this idea is sh
ared by many, based on the belief that learning Latin is capable of fo
rming the learner's mind in a way that no other subject possibly could
. Effects of Latin are analysed on the light of results of the cogniti
ve educational psychology. The article gives an overview of the few em
pirical studies available on the effects of learning Latin. An importa
nt result: There are no general transfer effects of Latin.
