Abstract
It has been one of the basic tenets of German humanism that the classi cal languages, along with mathematics, should play a decisive role in every formal education worthy of the name. Even today, this idea is sh ared by many, based on the belief that learning Latin is capable of fo rming the learner's mind in a way that no other subject possibly could . Effects of Latin are analysed on the light of results of the cogniti ve educational psychology. The article gives an overview of the few em pirical studies available on the effects of learning Latin. An importa nt result: There are no general transfer effects of Latin.
