The P K beta emission and S K beta emission spectra in fluorescence fr
om many selected compounds, P4O10, KPF6, M(4)P(2)O(7), M(2)SO(3), M(2)
SO(4), MHSO(4) (M = Na and K), P4Sn (n = 3, 5, 7 and 10), Na2S2On (n =
3-7) and K2S2On (n = 3, 5, 7 and 8), are measured with a high-resolut
ion two-crystal vacuum spectrometer equipped with Ge(111)crystals. The
measured K beta emission spectra are discussed in relation to the fun
damental structures of the compounds and interpreted in terms of avail
able molecular-orbital calculations of the PF6- ion and sulfur oxo ani
ons. It is shown that the emission spectra are strongly influenced by
chemical environments around phosphorus and sulfur atoms in the compou
nds, but little affected by the metal ions Na+ and K+.
