Abstract
The out-of-plane orbital magnetic moment of Co in Co/Pt multilayers wh ich possess varying degrees of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been investigated using techniques which included magnetic X-ray circu lar dichroism (MXCD). The magnitude of the orbital d moment per Co ato m, m(orb), was found to have increased in the multilayer structures co mpared to that of a single thick Co film, and this increase was found to scale approximately linearly to the magnitude of the effective anis otropy energy.
