Sh. Jamal et al., NOVEL TECHNIQUE FOR ACHIEVING DUAL-DOMAIN ALIGNMENT IN TWISTED NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND ITS APPLICATION, JPN J A P 2, 34(10B), 1995, pp. 1368-1371
A simple technique for achieving dual-domain alignment in a twisted ne
matic liquid crystal display (TN-L-CD) is proposed. By incorporating t
he use of linearly polarized deep UV (DUV) for liquid crystal alignmen
t, only one rubbing and one photolithographic process are added to con
ventional TN fabrication. We fabricated dual-domain twisted nematic (D
DTN) cells using this technique with a practical pixel resolution. Thi
s DDTN cell has very symmetrical viewing characteristics in both the v
ertical and horizontal viewing directions. With the use of the proper
type of retardation films along with this DDTN we have been able to ac
hieve a contrast ratio of 10:1, to almost +/-40 degrees in the vertica
l and beyond +/-60 degrees in the horizontal viewing directions, witho
ut any gray-scale inversion.
