We fabricated a 50-nm-wide GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs multiple-quantum-wire struc
ture with the cleaved-edge overgrowth technique and investigated the c
haracteristics of its low-temperature magnetoresistances. A clear Shub
nikov-de Haas oscillation was observed and found to contain unexpected
oscillatory components. By analyzing the magnetoresistance and its te
mperature dependence, the formation of one-dimensional subbands was re
vealed. On the basis of a semiclassical model, the width of lateral co
nfinement was estimated and found to be similar to 50 nm.
