Abstract
An interesting type of surfactant-mediated growth is observed in epita xy of Fe on Cu(001). It differs from the usual phenomenon by the fact that two species, oxygen and carbon, are required to suppress three-di mensional islanding. Alone they have little or no detrimental effect o n the growth mode. One of the species dissolves in Fe, drastically aff ecting the stability of this pseudomorphic ultrathin film system.
