Abstract
Acoustic propagation in shallow water is similar to that in a waveguid e with randomly rough walls. The field in such a guide can be calculat ed as a sum of coupled modes. However, the approach breaks down for de ep surface roughness when the number of modes becomes too large to han dle. A method is presented, based on a set of coupled integral equatio ns, that allows the field to be calculated in a guide when both surfac e and bottom can have deep modulations. The applicability to underwate r acoustics is discussed and some examples given. (C) 1995 Acoustical Society of America.
