The main results of the synthesis and application of catalysts for the
hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds based on complexes of
platinum-group metals with aliphatic amines possessing fairly bulky al
kyl groups (C-8 and above) are systematized. The common genesis of cat
alytically active systems with the participation of palladium, platinu
m, rhodium, and ruthenium is pointed out. This is manifested by the fo
rmation of hydride ligands on the metal on account of the hydrogen of
the alkyl groups of the tertiary amine at the first stage of reaction
of the initial platinum metal compound with the amine. The specific be
haviour of catalysts for each of the metals is indicated. Examples are
given of synergism in mixed systems including complexes of two metals
.
