Two different routes have been studied to produce heterobimetallic Mo-
Sn compounds containing bidentate PP-donor ligands. The first, involvi
ng the reaction of [Mo(SnRCl(2))(Cl)(CO)(3)(CH3CN)(2)] (R = Me, Ph) wi
th PP-donor ligands [PP = 1,2-bis (diphenylphosphine)ethane, dppe; 1,3
-bis(diphenylphosphine)propane, dppp] always gave rise to neutral seve
n-coordinate complexes of the type Mo(SnRCl(2))(Cl)(CO)(3)(eta 2-PP)](
I). On the other band, three types of compounds were isolated from rea
ctions of [Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-LL)(L')] [LL = PP- or NN-donor ligand, PP
= bis(diphenylphosphine)methane (dppm), NN = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 1,
10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmp); L' =
CO or eta(1)-dppm] with SnCl4 used as second synthetic route. So, the
cationic six-coordinate complex [Mo(SnCl3)(CO)(3)(eta(2)-dppm)](+) (I
I) and neutral or cationic seven-coordinate complexes [Mo(SnCl3)(Cl)(C
O)(3)(eta(2)-NN)] (III) and [Mo(SnCl3)(CO)(2)(eta(2)-NN)(eta(2)-dppm)]
(+) (IV) are obtained depending on the solvent and the nature of the l
igands. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
