The condensed phase and matrix isolation IR and Raman spectra of antim
ony tribromide are reported. The solid-state spectrum comprises bands
assignable to both molecular SbBr3 and ionic SbBr6- species. The frequ
ency shifts and mode sequence in the melt spectrum indicate strong dip
ole-dipole interactions. The matrix isolation spectra show bands of mo
nomeric SbBr3 and of its centrosymmetric dimer, but no features of coo
perative interactions. A ''bond fluctuation'' explanation, previously
forwarded for antimony trichloride,is considered to be further substan
tiated by the present findings. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Lt
