It was demonstrated that acridinium cation does not interact directly
with copper electrode surface in acid sulfate solution. In the presenc
e of chloride, acridinium cation adsorbed on the electrode as an ion p
air with chloride anion. In the whole potential range investigated, fr
om 0 V to a chloride desorption potential at about -0.6 V, acridinium
did not undergo any redox-process. By shifting a potential towards neg
ative values acridinium tends to reorient to a position perpendicular
to the electrode plane. The formation of the ion pair stabilized chlor
ide adsorption on the electrode surface.
