In large concrete constructions, differences in temperature develop wi
thin the concrete mass as a result of slow dissipation of heat of hydr
ation, causing thermal stresses and possibly early cracking of concret
e. In some instances, cooling of concrete has been used successfully t
o reduce the temperature difference, although in hot weather it may be
difficult and costly to cool large volumes of concrete. This paper pr
oposes a new layering method in which only the central portion of conc
rete is cooled for the reduction of temperature differences. The resul
ts of computer simulations involving the application of this layering
method are presented.
