A method for the determination of copper in skim milks using graphite
furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) has been studied. The p
rocedure includes digestion of the samples in a domestic microwave ove
n. A Pd-Mg nitrate modifier solution was added to the mineralized solu
tion and the mixture injected into a pyrolytically coated graphite tub
e fitted with a L'vov platform. A detection limit of 0.47 mu g/L and a
precision of 4.0-8.5% (relative standard deviation) were achieved. Be
tter analytical results were obtained for the certified milks when a m
atrix modifier was used. This relatively simple method is useful, prac
tical, and fast and does not expose the sample to contamination.
