Single crystals of FeCl2(pyz)(2) were prepared for the first time by s
ol-gel technique using pyrazine in tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) as the ge
l-forming reagent. The red polymeric Fe(II) complex crystallizes in th
e orthorhombic space group Ccca with lattice parameters a = 10.236(2)
Angstrom, b = 10.599(2) Angstrom, c = 10.291(2) Angstrom and Z = 4 for
mula units. The structure consists of infinite Fe(pyz)(2) layers paral
lel (010) with a square planar Fe-N-4 coordination completed to a near
ly undistorted square bipyramide by the two chloro ligands.
