Reciprocal (direct + inverse) electromagnetic-acoustic transduction in
ferrites of the spinel class is investigated experimentally and compa
red with the case of electrically conducting magnets. It is shown that
surface forces play a decisive role in ferrites. In the temperature r
ange from T-room to the Curie point T-c the generation of both longitu
dinal and transverse ultrasound is instigated exclusively by anisotrop
ic magnetostriction. A qualitative interpretation is given for the tem
perature dependences of the electromagnetic-acoustic transduction para
meters in ferrites.
