The ecology of rodents and insectivores in Hanoi (Vietnam) was studied
throughout 5 months (February - June 1993). The study was carried out
on both sides of Red river in the environment of several types: lawns
, weeds, dumps, buildings. 10 species of rodents (N=156) and 1 species
of insectivores, (N=39) were trapped. Right and left sides of Red riv
er are characterized by different species number and diversity, and di
fferent distribution of habitats. Rattus flavipectus, R. norvegicus an
d Mus musculus were the most abundant species. The towns in tropical r
egions are characterized by richer species diversity and larger amount
s of commensal rodents as compared to European ones.
