The electric quadrupole moment of the 9/2(-) isomer in the Ta-171 nucl
eus, populated in the Tb-159(O-16, 4n gamma)Ta-171 reaction, has been
measured for the first time using the TDPAD technique. The measured va
lue Q(9/2(-)) = 3.09(19) b and B(M1)/B(E2) ratios, deduced from the ex
isting gamma-ray spectroscopic data, have been used to derive shape pa
rameters for the pi h(11/2) band based on this isomer. The present res
ults are consistent with a quadrupole deformation beta = 0.22(1), gamm
a = 0 degrees +/- 10 degrees.
