A study was conducted among final-year social work students in five un
iversities in Israel, with the objective of understanding students' co
mmitment to the social work profession, and what variables might influ
ence that commitment. The 271 students present on the day of data coll
ection completed a questionnaire drawn up to measure their motivation.
Multiple regression analysis showed that 27 percent of the observed v
ariance could be explained by three independent variables. The article
describes and analyses the implications of the findings for social wo
rk education and for the future of the profession.
