Three general topics are included. First, a summary of knowledge of ma
ting systems in several genera is furnished, with discussion concernin
g individual species. Second, the consequence of mating studies in exp
ansion or contraction of numbers of accepted names is discussed. Inher
ent in this topic is the species concept to be used by the systematist
. Third, guidelines for establishment of standard batteries of tester
strains are outlined, using Pleurotus as an example.
