This paper describes the first stage in the development of the Ice Inf
ormation System (IIS) to be implemented at the NERSC. The potential us
ers of the IIS and typical products and services of the IIS are identi
fied. An exhaustive survey of the input data sources is presented with
emphasis on differences in formats, spatial and temporal sampling cha
racteristics, and measured parameters. The potential problems of integ
rating different types of input data are discussed and approaches for
overcoming these are mentioned. A number of output scenarios from a mu
ltisensor perspective are outlined.
