A. Bilewicz et al., CHEMICAL STUDIES OF RUTHERFORDIUM (ELEMENT-104) .1. THIN-FILM FERROCYANIDE SURFACES FOR THE STUDY OF THE HYDROLYSIS OF RUTHERFORDIUM, Radiochimica Acta, 75(3), 1996, pp. 121-126
The chemical properties of element 104, rutherfordium (Rf), and its gr
oup 4 homologs were studied by sorption on glass support surfaces coat
ed with cobalt ferrocyanide. The surface studies showed that the hydro
lysis trend in the group 4 elements and the pseudogroup 4 element, Th,
decreases in the order Rf > Zr approximate to Hf > Th. This unexpecte
d trend was attributed to relativistic effects which predict that Rf(4
+) would be more prone to having a coordination number (CN) of 6 than
8 in aqueous solutions due to a destabilization of the 6d(5/2) shell.
