The impact of mid-life separation and divorce on family intergeneratio
nal linkages is considered in relation to the completion of late famil
y stage tasks. Special reference is made to family celebrations as occ
asions which often reflect the merging of various sub-groups of the fa
mily. Consideration is given to recommendations coming out of the femi
nist literature on family therapy regarding the concept of less struct
urally determined family boundaries.
