The present study was based on a sample of 63 Mexican and 100 Spanish
subjects of both sexes, of 11 to 13 years old, with the purpose of com
paring their mental structure of the self-concept. The self-concept qu
estionnaire of Valdez-Medina and Reyes-Lagunes (1993) was used, adapti
ng it for the Spanish sample, which demonstrated good results. By mean
s of factor analysis with varimax rotation, differences in the structu
re and the content of the self-concept of both samples were found, as
an effect of culture. Thus, it was ratified that the Mexican subjects
tend to perceive themselves as more obedient-affiliative and respectfu
l of norms, while the Spanish ones seen to be more rebellious-self-aff
irmative and assertive.
