One of every five women presenting to a general gynecologist complains
of abnormal uterine bleeding. Physicians must understand the normal m
enstrual cycle, how it may be pathologically altered, and what differe
nt treatments are available to efficiently deal with abnormal uterine
bleeding. When bleeding is irregular but not excessive and does not in
terfere with normal activity, explanation, reassurance, and observatio
n can be the best approach. Disabling, heavy uterine bleeding requires
medical or surgical intervention. This article provides background in
