90-10 Copper-nickel is an alloy which has been used widely for its cor
rosion resistance in sea water. It is also recognised, like copper, fo
r its biofouling-resistant properties. As the alloy is readily fabrica
ted and welded, its overall properties make it ideal for the sheathing
of boat hulls, offshore structures and other applications requiring p
rotection against the ravages of marine environments. This paper descr
ibes the properties of 90-10 copper-nickel and discusses the various t
ypes of sheathing which have developed in more recent times. The perfo
rmance of the alloy is demonstrated by exposure trials and service exp
erience.
