We propose a new self-routing switch network, the fast rearrangeable n
onblocking (FAN) switch, and its control algorithm. The FAN switch is
a rearrangeable switch network and is applicable to asynchronous trans
fer mode (ATM) switching because rearranging and routing are performed
by hardware on the same time. The FAN switch has a modular structure
that is constructed by connecting 4 x 4 elementary switches that consi
sts of 2 x 4, 2 x 2, and 4 x 2 elements. We prove that the FAN switch
with its characteristic control algorithm is a nonblocking network and
compare it to other self-routing switch networks.
