Abstract
The preventive effects of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) adm inistration on progression of anemia were evaluated during hemodialysi s in nephrectomized dogs. In control dogs given no rhEPO, anemia gradu ally progressed with repeated hemodialysis and with little erythropoie tic response observed in the bone marrow. In dogs administered with rh EPO, however, an active erythropoietic response was induced in the bon e marrow, indicating that anemia due to hemodialysis was being prevent ed.
