As well in the studio signal processing as in the television receiver
the integration of different video media becomes more and more importa
nt. This paper introduces a new way of bridging different video produc
tion and transmission standards for digital television broadcasting. T
he proposed format is based on progressively scanned images and uses a
reversible synthetic interlace for transmission. This format fits as
well to the interlace based television infrastructure as to the profes
sional multimedia production facilities using 35 mm film. Especially f
or motion vector based digital transmissions an algorithm is introduce
d to transcode the used dense vector field into a block vector field t
hat meets the MPEG-2 requirements and enables an appropriate upconvers
ion process at the decoder side. This motion vector based reversible i
nterlacer is able to bridge the progressive film and computer, vith the
interlaced television world.
