The widespread reluctance of marital practitioners to conduct standard
ized assessments may be indicative of the difficulties involved in ide
ntifying and selecting useful measures from the burgeoning assessment
literature. To address this problem, a model of marital functioning is
presented that organizes the large body of longitudinal research on m
arriage. For each of the 4 components of the model-involving Marital Q
uality and Stability, Adaptive Processes, Stressful Events, and Enduri
ng Vulnerabilities-several potentially potentially useful self-report
instruments or observational procedures are described.
