A number of approaches for implementing orthogonal analysers using ada
ptive filtering techniques are investigated in this paper. A general c
onnection between adaptive filtering and orthogonal transforms is pres
ented. In particular, the LMS-based discrete orthogonal analyser is in
vestigated and sufficient conditions for implementation are derived. W
e then propose an orthogonal analyser using the adaptive Sampling Matr
ix Inversion (SMI) algorithm, which is applicable for all orthogonal t
ransforms. Finally, an orthogonal analyser using an adaptive Howells-A
pplebaum loop is analysed and shown to be capable of performing the Fo
urier analysis for continuous time signals.
