Suicidal behaviour among children and young adolescents constitutes a
serious and increasing public health problem. Currently, little is kno
wn about how these youngsters and their families respond to profession
al intervention, or what kinds of intervention may be most appropriate
for them. We describe here an intervention package, the structure and
content of which is based on insights gained from previous research s
tudies and extensive clinical practice. Essential features of the pack
age are that it is short-term, focused, intensive, and home-based. The
Intervention Package is currently the focus of a major controlled eva
luative study. (C) 1995 The Association for Professionals in Sen ices
