Abstract
Due to quantum noise, 3 dB noise is added to the optical signal by any laser-like optical amplifier, while an optical Y-coupler degrades the signal to quantum-noise ratio by 3 dB. Recent studies of quantum nois e in parametric amplification demonstrate the possibility of noiseless amplification and duplication of optical signals.
