The French-Italian collaboration VIRGO is about to build a kilometric
interferometer for the detection of gravitational waves from cosmic so
urces. The sensitivity level (spectral density) to reach is about h ap
proximate to 3 10-23 Hz(-1/2), in the frequency window [10 Hz, 10 kHz]
, in order to observe at least some events per year. We present the me
ans of decreasing the noise sources together with the technological ef
forts to achieve.
